"I often wonder what these curious signs are by the side of the road - the circular ones with numbers in them. Do they tell me how far it is to the nearest post office?"
Every class of road has an undisputed unanimously universally hated category of road user. For the A and B roads of the UK it is undoubtedly the 40mph driver. As despised as the middle lane driver is to motorway users, the 40mph driver merrily goes about their entire driving day at a speed of 40mph regardless of their immediate surroundings. They epitomise everything that is wrong with many of today's drivers in the UK.
Arrow straight de-restricted A road? 40mph thank you please. A queue of one hundred cars? So what? Impatience is inevitable and it causes accidents regardless of who's to blame. Eventually someone in the queue of seething traffic will have reached the end of their tether, and through gritted teeth the driver will see red and throw all caution to the wind to get past the 40mph driver. I ask myself the selfish question "should this driver be allowed on the road?" If there's no alternative but so sit in the queue because it's nose-to-tail then my answer is no. I may regret writing this when I reread this page in a few years, but at the moment there is nothing more than I would like than the 40mph driver to be beaten with a beaded car seat.

Save us!
The final nail in the 40mph driver's coffin does not have a selfish motive. It's driven by the unending rage that occurs when you finally enter a 30mph zone behind the 40mph driver only to discover they disappear into the distance at precisely the same speed. Perhaps you observe them passing a school or accident black spot, a built up urban area or pedestrian crossing in the distance. Perhaps none of those self righteous observations occur and to be honest I don't care, get these idiots off the road because they are stupid and a danger to society!
